Wafer Assembly With 2 Sides Electrical Contacts

Electrical contact from both sides of a thin wafer

This assembly was designed to hold a thin 10 mm diameter wafer while making electrical contact from both sides and sealing the sample area for liquid work. The top and bottom parts each include a copper interface, where tiny spring contacts are glued in place with electrically conductive epoxy. When the two sides close together, the wafer is contacted gently from both faces and the signal is routed to rigid SMA electrical connectors.

The assembly needed precise and gentle closing, so I also made a dedicated assembly jig for it. I used Thorlabs parts and rails to guide the top part over the bottom part and over the wafer, helping the two sides come together in a controlled way without damaging the sample or the fine contacts. This made the assembly process more repeatable and much easier to handle in practice.
